11. Summary
I would stress again that I am an amateur and that my research has no official standing.
Important points are:-
The first recorded Hope in Scotland was Johan de Hope of the Ragman's Roll of 1296.
There were recorded Hopes in England before this date.
The importance of the 1321 document listing Robert Swynhope and Symon de la Hope.
That there were the separate Edinburgh Hopes and Border Hopes that had completely different derivations of the name and also different origins that have merged into one Scottish family. This family is recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon as being an armigerous family and the right to have a chief. However it is probable despite their common Scottish descent that the totem of the Border Hopes should be the heraldic Celtic Raven of Flintshire (see section 9 Hope Family Heraldry) - either three or four ravens on a silver field, and not the rainbow/anchor emblem of Craighall, the chief. Also a separate tartan may be in order for the Border Hopes - how about the Tweed Valley tartan?
That the Parish of Hope in Flintshire in North Wales has several Hope connections. Connection certainly with the Scottish Borders and because of the heraldry also a connection with Derbyshire. Some commonality of the heraldry between the Hopes of Craighall and the Van der Hoops of Holland indicate that they may have more in common than just being Merchant Bankers.
Perusal of the current telephone directories for the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh/Lothians and Dumfriesshire indicate that these areas are still amazingly the heartlands of the Hopes in Scotland. This is confirmed by statistics compiled by University College London on www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames click box on top right. The interesting maps also show that the English side of the Border was also a hot spot for Hopes. These stats. list the geographical spread of the surname and New Zealand heads the list followed by Australia, Canada and then U.S.A. and Northern Ireland.
